Leisurely morning. Already hot by 8AM. Nothing new there. I sleep with windows closed and air conditioning on all night. In fact, last night I finally figured out how to leave the card key in its slot so electricity stays on and turn off all the lights, except the one in the bathroom. The latter is mitigated by keeping the the door shut.
Originally planned to be the morning we rode bikes along the Elbe River, due to the intense heat and humidity Zelda and I opted out. The “kids” went ahead riding bikes early to Juli’s apartment to meet her cat and then along a portion of the Elbe River before returning back to the hotel.

Meanwhile, after a short walk around the Frauenkirche and along Brühlsche Terrace, I headed to Zelda’s apartment in our hotel to make a protein shake for breakfast and have some catch-up time together. This afternoon Tejomaya and I head on foot to Neustadt, which I read was Dresden’s hippest area of students, young professionals and artists — a veritable multicultural melting pot that is modern, lively and offbeat. A mecca for trendy fashion boutiques and small art galleries. |
Our route took us over the Elbe River via the Carolabrücker (bridge). From the Carolaplatz, we wandered along Bautznerstrasse to Pfunds Molkerei (Bautznerstrasse 79), the oldest daily shop in East Germany. Founded in 1879, it serves homemade ice cream and cheese, and even more impressive are the floor-to-ceiling handprinted porcelain tiles. Then, we began weaving our way among the small streets in hopes of discovering some of the hip German-designer shops for those older than 20-somethings. What we did find were hip shops for 20-somethings and hold-over hippies, some great graffiti, and charming narrow streets, cafés and bars.
Unfortunately, I didn’t do enough research to know where exactly we needed to go in the Äußere section of Neustadt to find the types of boutiques I had hoped to find. Next trip!
With the sun starting to sink, we walked back to our hotel . . . with a few packages and photographs to show for our expedition. That evening, we all decided upon Thai take-out and stay in to make the necessary train and hotel reservations for our journey to Berlin in the morning!
